Y.P.I.S. LIVE! is a three-round game with each round increasing in difficulty. Throughout the three rounds, the Your Privilege Is Showing facilitator guides participants through challenging, courageous conversations.
The fundamental philosophy of Your Privilege Is Showing is that systems of oppression (sexism, racism, privilege, ableism, and classism, among others) are both personal and universal. No matter who we are, we have all internalized and participated in these systems, and are hurt by them in some way… but we don’t talk about them. If we can't talk about the way the world around us enforces and reinforces systems of oppression, we can't even begin to understand our part in them.
Your Privilege Is Showing LIVE! provides a structure for these conversations to happen. The game takes present day examples of sexism, racism, heterosexism, misogyny, ableism, privilege, as well as other forms of injustice, and asks participants to identify what kinds of biases are in operation and how to interrupt that behavior. Your Privilege Is Showing LIVE! also has mechanisms built in to discuss other participants’ opinions, questions, and constructive disagreements.
OUTCOMES for participants
Learn how to recognize and name social injustice in the world and in their own lives
Work through the discomfort of talking about their own culpability with white supremacy, patriarchy and other forms of bias based on privilege
Become aware of the ways in which each of us are ignorant and how social justice and injustice impacts all of our daily lives
Understand some of the ways in which systemic oppression is societal in scale and deeply personal in impact
Improve communication skills to better navigate complex, charged topics
Build understanding, empathy, trust, and cultural competence
